Learn, win and get published!

Enter the Tomorrow's Heritage competition and explore what the future may hold for our heritage places. Winning entries will be published in the special commemorative edition of Heritage New Zealand, prepared as part of the Trust's 50th anniversary celebrations in 2005.

Teachers may like to use this competition and the related achievement objectives to support further study in the classroom about heritage preservation in the community.

Students - use your imagination to write an essay or draw a picture to show what you think will happen to our heritage places over the next 50 years.....

Categories

Junior: Years 4-6 (approx 8-10 years of age)
Intermediate: Years 7-8 (approx 11-12 years of age)
Senior: Years 9-11 (approx 13-15 years of age)

Entries from individual students are preferred.

Essay

What do you think will happen to New Zealand's heritage places over the next 50 years?

Some ideas you could consider are:

  • How will our attitudes towards our heritage places change?
  • What problems will be faced by our heritage places?
  • How will these problems be resolved?
  • How will we determine what is worth preserving and when?
  • Who is responsible for looking after our heritage places?
  • What importance will they hold for us?
  • What will we use them for?

Word limits

Junior & intermediate categories: maximum 300 words
Senior category: maximum 500 words.

Electronic submissions are acceptable, but please submit the documents formatted for Windows (pc). Please check the other terms & conditions before commencing.

Artwork

Draw a picture that shows what New Zealand's heritage will be like in 50 years. This might be a cityscape, a country town or a special place.

Some ideas you could consider are:

  • Which heritage places will be preserved?
  • What place will heritage places have in our cities, towns and countryside?
  • What will they be used for?
  • Who is responsible for looking after them?
  • Will our attitudes towards heritage places have changed?
  • What problems will these places face?
  • How will we overcome these problems?

Size limits

The maximum size of the drawing must not exceed A3 (297 x 420mm) in size. Use paper or light cardboard not less than 80gsm in weight (photocopy paper) and not more than 250gsm (light cardboard). Please do not mount or frame pictures. These conditions reflect the requirement for the printer to be able to readily scan pictures for inclusion in the magazine.

Any artwork submitted electronically or on CD must be accompanied by hard copy. Please refer to the terms and conditions below for more information about entry.

Entries close on Friday 1 April 2005.

Prizes

Essay (individual award)

The winner in each age group will receive $200 and two runners-up $75 each. The winning students' schools will each receive a complementary membership of the New Zealand Historic Places Trust for one year.

Artwork (individual award)

The winner in each age group will receive $100. The winning students' schools will each receive a complementary membership of the New Zealand Historic Places Trust for one year.

In addition, the schools of all winning students will be presented with a copy of Landmarks by David McGill and Grant Sheehan (RRP $49.95). A second edition (updated and redesigned) is being published this year as part of the Trust's 50th anniversary celebrations

Judging

A judging panel drawn from NZHPT and DoC staff will assess the entries and choose the winner and two runners-up in each category. The winners will be advised in writing by 30 April.

The winners will be announced in the Winter 2005 issue of Heritage New Zealand, on the NZHPT website and the monthly electronic newsletter "Heritage This Month", and the winning entries will be published in the magazine, and on the Trust's website (where possible).

The judges will be looking for

  • How well the question has been answered or illustrated - is the response on the topic?
  • Understanding of who the people and/or the organisations are who are involved in caring for our heritage places
  • Understanding of how attitudes to special places change over time
  • Use of imagination/creativity in responding to the question
  • Logical reasoning in the essay, or ability to communicate ideas clearly in art.

Please make sure that your entry is labelled with

  • your name and address
  • your teacher's name
  • your school's name and address, and
  • clearly identify the (agegroup) category in which you have entered.

Terms/conditions

  • The essay or picture must be original work submitted for the purposes of this competition.
  • The length of the story may not exceed the word lengths stated by more than 5% (15-25 words).
  • The dimensions of the artwork/picture may not exceed the size stated. Please do not submit three-dimensional pictures, dioramas or sculptures.
  • Electronic documents (text) should be formatted for Windows, pc. Images must be high resolution (minimum 300 dpi) jpg or tif files, formatted for pc. Image files larger than 5MB will need to burned to CD.
  • Regretfully, any electronic submissions that cannot be opened will be eliminated from the competition.
  • In the event of a group entry, only one prize will be presented for the students to share.
  • Highly commended entries will receive a certificate.
  • The winners' work will appear in the commemorative edition of Heritage New Zealand, Winter 2005 issue, due out in early June. Other entries may be published in subsequent issues of Heritage New Zealand at the discretion of the editorial staff.
  • The Historic Places Trust reserves the right to use the winning material in other publications or activities associated with the 50th anniversary. Appropriate credit will be made to the author or artist.
  • The decision of the judges is final, and no correspondence will be entered into.
