Lesson 2 - Why is this place significant?

  • Describe ways in which heritage is recorded
    and passed on to others
  • Identify changes that have occurred in aspects
    of culture and heritage as a result of technological change
  • Explain why some features resulting from past interactions endure while others disappear.

Lesson

Students are asked to research and identify a significant place in their area that is listed on the New Zealand Historic Places Trust's Register of Historic Places.

Focus Questions

  • What makes this place significant?
  • What features are there that reflect people's relationships to the place?
  • What are the different historical, spiritual, economic, aesthetic or recreational views held about this place?
  • How did this place impact on people's lives in the past?
  • How does this place continue to shape relationships between groups?
  • Describe the possible future consequences of individuals or groups that may have different perspectives about the preservation of this place.

Using a New Zealand map and information from the Register www.historic.org.nz/register, locate the historic places shown at right. Each of these places has a story to tell, write a sentence for each, giving information relating to its origin and purpose.
