Lesson 3 - Who has?

Specific Learning Outcomes

  • Identify some New Zealand Historic Places Trust
    properties
  • Understand the historical significance of the properties
  • Gain awareness of the philosophical basis for protecting and preserving these places

Lesson

Who has?

The 'Who Has' sheet should be cut into small cards and each student given one. The person who has the card with The New Zealand Historic Places Trust Pouhere Taonga starts and reads 'I have the New Zealand Historic Places Trust Pouhere Taonga. Who has the site of the first Roman Catholic Chapel?'.
The person with Pompallier says 'I have Pompallier, who has a turn of the century rural engineering works housed in mud brick and stone?'

This continues until the game loops back to the start.
Teacher times the game when played. As students become more aware of the places and their definitions the game loops faster.

Promotional brochure

Students design a promotional brochure for the Historic Places Trust. This is to be specifically designed to capture the interest of young people and promote the message of heritage protection.

A logo will be included in the brochure that encompasses the vision of the student and that of the Historic Places Trust.

The class set of brochures will become part of a display on heritage. This display could include a Viewpoint section, where all children in the school are given a chance to express their viewpoints about related issues such as:

Viewpoints

  • What is historically valuable?
  • Should we remake the past?
  • Who owns the past and who should administer it?
  • How can major change for economic use be accommodated without losing the historic character of a place?
