Our Pictures are Worth a Thousand Words

New Zealand Historic Places Trust Information Release
4 June 2008

New work has begun making the information held on New Zealand's Register of historic places more accessible to all New Zealanders by the addition of images.

"We want to make the information come alive so that people will be more interested in looking at their heritage legacy," says Rebecca O'Brien, Registrar at New Zealand Historic Places Trust.

"Photographs and other images, together with historical information, will give a real snapshot of history to people consulting the Online Register."

A project began this week to find images of properties on the Register, obtain permissions for using photographs and matching them with existing reports and references in the Register database.

"The aim is to make our heritage more relevant, valued and accessible to all New Zealanders by allowing people to learn about our history from wherever they are" Ms O'Brien said. "It's a new way of making our information available".

This new and exciting piece of work has been made possible by a grant from the New Zealand Community Trust. Their National Grants Manager Tony Gill has identified heritage as something his organisation wants to support. By supporting this venture the Trust is contributing a valuable resource to communities throughout the country."

To bring the Register to life, the NZHPT will be contacting schools, hospitals, and church groups nationwide to locate photos and images of their buildings and artefacts, as well as government departments and the National Library.

Anybody can access the Register online and learn where New Zealand's significant historic places and areas are located throughout the country, and to read about their history. As most of New Zealand's heritage is in private ownership and not accessible to the public the Online Register is vital in allowing the nation's rich heritage to be shared.

"We know that the New Zealand Community Trust wishes us every success with this venture and we certainly know the value of their contribution" Ms O'Brien concluded.
