The Chair of the New Zealand Historic Places Trust Board, John Acland, affirmed today the NZHPT’s position that the Queens Wharf and its associated structures are significant and their future needs to be considered carefully.

Much of the focus has been on the two cargo sheds, however they are only part of the wider context of the wharf’s historical importance.

The heritage significance of Queens Wharf is not only in these buildings but in the associated features that allowed the wharf to operate.

The railway lines, berthings, and the wharf’s context including its relationship to other wharves all help to tell the story of the port as a whole.

The NZHPT is engaging with the Auckland Regional Council as the owners and developers to discuss the future of Queens Wharf.

It would be premature to predict the outcome of these discussions before they have really begun, however the Board recognises the Queens Wharf has a long history which should be recognised in long term plans.
