The New Zealand Historic Places Trust (NZHPT) has temporarily closed public access to the Matanaka Farm Buildings following severe winds that have buffeted the Otago peninsula.

The historic NZHPT property at Waikouaiti was originally home to whaler, farmer, ship owner and merchant Johnny Jones from 1843.  The farm buildings are located close to steep cliffs that overlook the Pacific Ocean.

NZHPT Heritage Destinations Manager Paul McGahan said severe winds had brought down a large tree along the track leading to the farm buildings.  It is the second time this year fallen trees have forced the temporary closure of the property.  In May trees were uprooted in the car park area and along the track.

The NZHPT has used emergency tape to cordon off access to the walking track. Contractors will be called in to remove the fallen tree.

“As was the case in May the farm buildings remain in good condition but the track is certainly not accessible at the moment,” said Mr McGahan.

“This really is a precautionary measure to temporarily close the attraction.  Public safety is our first concern, and until we are 100 percent confident that visitors can safely access the site the closed sign will remain.”
