New Zealand Historic Places Trust - Pouhere Taonga

New futures- rethinking our urban heritage

print page

Exploring the economics of heritage - creative solutions to ensure our heritage endures.

Due to the overwhelmingly positive feedback received from heritage and economics specialist Donovan Rypkema’s 2010 NZ tour, the New Zealand Historic Places Trust has produced a DVD of four of his presentations.

The DVD comprises the following 4 x 45 minute PowerPoint presentations edited together with Donovan’s accompanying commentary:

  • Measuring Heritage’s Economic Impact & Emerging Approaches to Heritage
  • Incentives in Heritage Conservation
  • 100 Measurements for Success
  • Public Private Partnerships

Donovan Rypkema is president of Heritage Strategies International. HSI was established in 2004 as a companion firm to PlaceEconomics, a consulting firm of which Rypkema is the principal. PlaceEconomics – widely recognized as the industry leader in the economics of historic preservation – specializes in services to public and NGO clients who are dealing with centre city revitalization and the reuse of heritage structures.

These seminars are an invaluable resource for local authority professionals working in planning and heritage, and for community groups advocating for their local historic places.

"Donovan Rypkema was a consummate professional who put a different twist on old principles. It was really refreshing to listen to someone who did not come from a solely conservation approach and built his case studies and arguments around pragmatism.  He was also a very entertaining speaker capable of quickly summing up and engaging his audience."

- Jenny May ONZN BHons MICOMOS, Heritage Services Management.
