Swaggers Return for a Winter Muster
New Zealand Historic Places Trust information release
8 June 2005
From all parts of North Otago, Totara Estate's infamous swaggers will
gather this month for a mid-winter muster. The gathering is being held
to coincide with the arrival of the Lions 'Barmy Army'.
The aim is to introduce the Brits to the 'home of their Sunday roast',
a reference to Totara's experimental role in frozen meat exporting to
the mother country.
Small 'live days' are planned for Friday 17th June (the day before the
Lions game against Otago) and 24th June (the day before the first test
in Christchurch), 10am - 3pm.
The Lions supporters (and other visitors of course!) can expect to experience:
- A taste of hot Mutton Broth, Girdle Scones and Buttermaking in the
Cookhouse
- Horse & Carriage rides
- Storytelling and Quilting in the Men's Quarters
- Traditional Trades including Blacksmith & Woodworker
- A Swagger's tale around the campfire together with billy tea and
damper
- Sheep dog displays
- and (weather permitting), some Victorian finery 'bustling' about!
