Search help

The Register Online includes entries for all registered historic places and historic areas only. To find out about entries for registered wahi tapu or wahi tapu areas, contact the Maori Heritage Registrations Coordinator

For the full Register, as well as information on current proposals, registrations under investigation, interim registrations, heritage covenants and heritage orders you can view hard copies of the Register at your nearest office the New Zealand Historic Places Trust or your local city or district council office.

If this is inconvenient, or if you review the Register regularly, you may wish to purchase a copy of the Register. Contact the Registrar for more details.

To help you find the information that you are looking for:

  • Once you have completed one or more of the search boxes, always use the grey “Search” button located at the bottom of the search form to run your search.
  • Use the “tab” key to move between form fields, do not use the “enter” key.
  • Using the “enter” key at the end of a form field will commence the search based only on that field.
  • Predictive text will display for the “Name/Record No” and “Location” fields to help you narrow your search. You do not need to choose an option from the predictive text – use the “tab” key to move to the next form field(s) or the “search” button. The predictive text options will collapse .
  • A maximum of 500 results will be displayed for any search. If you are conducting a large search, you may need to refine and repeat your query to obtain results e.g. search for “all Category I historic places in Auckland” rather than “all Category I historic places”.
  • Partial words will return a result, e.g. “parlia” will find “parliament”
  • Searches using one word will find whatever it is in the field, so “Church” will find both “St John’s Church” and “Church of Christ”.
  • Multiple words must be next to each other and in the correct order, e.g. to find “Canterbury Jockey Club” you will need to enter “Jockey Club” and not “Club Jockey”.
  • Do not use wild-cards or Boolean logic

This site is updated after the regular meetings of the Maori Heritage Council and the NZHPT Board, where registration decisions are made.
