New Zealand's Finest Lamb-burger
New Zealand Historic Places Trust information release
23 March 2004
When it comes to exporting frozen lamb North Otago's Totara Estate led
the world. Now, 125 years on, the Estate is again seeking recognition
for the region's prime lamb.
The recipe for success this time round will lie with the culinary skills
of four local chefs each of whom is intent on creating a succulent lamb
burger that's a modern day world beater.
All are working hard to perfect their entries before the verdict is given
by a surprise celebrity judge at Totara Estate's annual Harvest
Home celebrations on April 3.
Locals and visitors, vagrants and vagabonds will also have a chance to
pass judgement on the creations during the coming month. Lamb burgers
will be on the menu at four top Oamaru eateries and as an added incentive
DB Mainland Breweries is offering the perfect accompaniment, a free glass
of its finest Monteiths beer.
Little wonder then that one of the first to savour the taste was local
identity Donna Demente who was more than happy to scrub the steps of a
local hostelry in order to score her share of the booty.
However the more conventional 'coinage of the realm' will be the recognised
currency for all others seeking to sample a succulent North Otago lamb
burger at either The Brydone, Fat Sally's, Fahrenheit, or The Last Post
during the month.
