Event has Guaranteed Pulling Power

New Zealand Historic Places Trust information release
13 September, 2006

With next year’s calendars already on sale, a day to mark down is Sunday 1st April.

That’s the day that Totara Estate’s Harvest Home – an established and eagerly anticipated event on North Otago’s calendar - will be celebrated.

Last year’s event saw over 3000 visitors witness amongst many activities, the time-honoured tradition of wheelwrighting, an almost forgotten art of wheel and wagon making.

This year’s theme will centre on ‘pulling power’, a celebration of the role that both ‘animal’ and ‘machine’ had on the success of early pioneering life. It is planned to host bullock and Clydesdale teams from as far as Motueka & Gore to participate in a range of activities including ploughing, chaff cutting and firewood splitting.

Visitors will have their chance to turn their hand to butter making then sample the result on billy bread and enjoy a range of heritage activities including storytellers, bush bands and country dancing, food hawkers, horse and carriage rides, a children’s hay bale maze, pony and penny farthing rides, a Grand Parade of Clydesdales and the very popular Swagger’s Race to the Brydone Monument.

Another feature of this year’s event will follow the theme of ‘From Fleece to Fashion’, celebrating wool’s journey from the sheep’s back to high fashion garment through displays of blade shearing, spinning, weaving, and designing.

The day will commence at 10.30am with a Thanksgiving Service and festivities will continue throughout the day.
