The Waimakariri district has many sites and buildings of historic significance. A small selection of the places open to the public are presented here. Please note that entry is not necessarily free, sometimes admission is by donation or koha. In some cases, you may need to make special arrangements to view. Please pay a visit and help keep our heritage places alive!

Ohoka Homestead Gardens

25 Jacksons Road, Ohoka

 

The garden is set around the historic Ohoka Homestead and stables and has origins dating back 130 years to when the homestead was built.

Open: the gardens are open to groups from November to March by appointment only

Rangiora & Districts Early Records Society and Museum

Good Street, Rangiora

 

The museum includes a 1905 sitting room, a c.1900 bedroom and an early kitchen.

Hours: Wednesday and Sunday 1.30 - 4.00pm

A local history museum housed in the Kaiapoi Historic Court House

Open: Thursday and Sunday 2.00-4.00 pm. At other times by arrangement.

Kaiapoi Railway Station (Information Centre)

Kaiapoi

 

The former railway station now operates as a visitor information centre. It was designed by Gordon Troup and built in 1904.

Kaiapoi Pa

Preeces Road, Woodend

 

This was one of the most important pa of the Ngai Tahu and the site of major greenstone workings. The pa was attacked by Te Rauparaha in 1831 and many Ngai Tahu killed. A monument was erected on the remaining earthworks in 1898.

HERITAGE TRAILS
 

Silent Stronghold

Kaiapoi Pa was the firstgerat site established after Ngai Tahu migrated from the North Island. Built in about 1700 by Moki for his brother Turakautahi, who led that migration, it became the tribe’s largest and most important stronghold, being headquarters of the tribe’s leading chiefs and having a population of more than 1000 by the time of recorded history.
