Otago: Heritage Sites

Dunedin Harbourside Area

The Dunedin City Council (DCC) is looking at opportunities to revitalise the harbourside area and to reconnect it to the central city. DCC is doing this as part of planning for the future growth of the city and to improve the way the city functions.

A consultation document has been launched which explains the harbourside vision and seeks public feedback on it. That vision aims to:

  • Connect the city to the harbour
  • Provide public access to the harbour edge and enhance harbourside amenities
  • Enhance the character and visual amenity of the area
  • Enable better use of land
  • Plan for economic growth
  • Provide for housing choice

The area of interest is adjacent to the old Steamer Basin, including the precinct immediately to the north. Harbourside Heritage is an important feature of this area as well as of the wider harbourside vicinity. But it is one of many factors in the document.

A Harbourside Report on Existing Heritage Values (pdf file, 678 kb) has been prepared by conservation architect Jeremy Salmond. It is based on a visual inspection of exteriors of buildings (no interiors considered, nor any history of uses, activities, people, events).

Further information is available, including the Salmond report and the Harbourside stakeholder consultation document and feedback form, from DCC Civic Centre or DCC web site,
or by contacting the Otago Branch Committee.

The consultation process is an important opportunity for you to express your views and opinions on the future of this part of Dunedin City. Send your comments to DCC by 30 September 2005

Heritage at Risk

Many historic buildings in Otago continue to be at risk of loss, damage, deterioration and neglect. They may have been abandoned or made vacant with no apparent care or re-use, targeted for demolition, or modified without consideration of their heritage values.

The Otago Branch Committee is on the lookout for significant heritage places worthy of saving, recording, or registration with the Trust. Opportunities to discuss future options with owners of heritage places are always welcome.

Please contact us or the staff of the Trust's Dunedin office if you can help in any way with this.
