The New Zealand Historic Places Trust (NZHPT) is a crown entity, New Zealand’s leading national historic heritage agency and guardian of Aotearoa New Zealand’s national heritage. The NZHPT's work includes identifying our heritage places, seeking to ensure they survive for appreciation by current and future generations, and fostering that appreciation by recording and sharing their stories.

The NZHPT’s national office is based in Antrim House, Wellington. Regional and area offices are located in Kerikeri, Auckland, Tauranga, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. Each is staffed by specialist advisors who are able to provide expert assistance on heritage conservation issues, including resource management and registration services.

A 2010 review of the Historic Places Act 1993 (HPA) has resulted in the introduction of the Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga Bill to the House. The submission period for this Bill initially closed on 19 July 2012, but has been extended to 29 November to permit comment on the Supplementary Order Paper.

The NZHPT is governed by a Board of Trustees comprised of nine members. Six members are appointed by the Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage, and three are elected from amongst the membership.

The NZHPT’s Maori Heritage Council comprises members of the Board, and four people appointed by the Minister of Culture and Heritage. The Council assists the NZHPT to develop and reflect a bicultural view in the exercise of its powers and functions.
