Before the 2008 General Election, the National Party indicated its interest in reviewing the Historic Places Act 1993 (HPA) as well as a number of other pieces of legislation. The Ministry for Culture and Heritage has been leading the review and initial proposals that will change how the NZHPT operates have been agreed by the Government.

The NZHPT’s national office is based in Antrim House, Wellington. Regional and area offices are located in Kerikeri, Auckland, Tauranga, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. Each is staffed by specialist advisors who are able to provide expert assistance on heritage conservation issues, including resource management and registration services.

The NZHPT is governed by a Board of Trustees comprised of nine members. Six members are appointed by the Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage, and three are elected from amongst the membership.

The NZHPT’s Maori Heritage Council comprises members of the Board, and four people appointed by the Minister of Culture and Heritage. The Council assists the NZHPT to develop and reflect a bicultural view in the exercise of its powers and functions.

There are 24 Branch Committees throughout New Zealand, formed from NZHPT’s membership in their geographic area. Branches work closely with the NZHPT’s Area Managers and Area Coordinators and the community to raise awareness of heritage issues, as well as provide opportunities for participation in heritage-related activities in their area.
