The NZHPT has prepared these guidelines on sustainable management of historic heritage to promote understanding of historic heritage and to assist local authorities, owners and developers to identify and manage historic heritage in light of the Resource Management Act (1991) and its 2003 Amendment.
The guidelines also provide information on the legal obligations associated with archaeological sites under the Historic Places Act.
They are intended particularly for people practising in the resource management field, but may also be useful for developers, property managers and others who work with heritage properties.
Use them as
- a source of information
- guidance when preparing plans and policies that address historic heritage
- a checklist when processing resource consents that have effects on historic heritage, including those that may affect archaeological sites.
The NZHPT hopes to update these guidelines as thinking and professional practice advances, as plans and policies are implemented and monitored, and as case law develops.
