February 2002Park Terrace Houses, ChristchurchTwo of the best examples of Arts and Crafts architecture in Christchurch are under threat of demolition.
Two heritage homes in Christchurch will have their fate decided when they are put up for auction on 28 February. The houses, on a prominent site on the corner of Bealey Avenue and Park Terrace, are owned by the Methodist Mission. The houses are two of the best examples of Arts and Crafts architecture in Christchurch and any thought of their demolition is devastating. Samuel Hurst Seager designed the McKellar House in 1912 while Cecil Wood designed the Fleming House, which was built in 1926. Until a few years ago the houses served as the Wesley Home. In 2000, the Mission, seeking to sell the property, applied to demolish the houses. Following protracted legal proceedings, the Environment Court ruled that the McKellar House could be demolished immediately and the Fleming House demolished once a building consent for its replacement had been granted. The Historic Places Trust was involved in the legal proceedings, has discussed the issues with the Mission and the City Council and has assisted with holding public meetings. Several potential purchasers have plans to re-use the buildings, but there is no guarantee a developer intent on clearing the site will not purchase the property. You can help by expressing your concern to the Christchurch City Council. A form letter (in Microsoft Word) for this purpose is available by clicking on the underlined text in the previous sentence. Please send a copy of your correspondence to the Trust's Chief Executive, Dr Bill Tramposch, PO Box 2629, Wellington.
