Omata, Jurys - Days 2 & 3

8 & 9 December 2007

Today the mechanical digger finished its work.

We have now seven Areas (labelled A to G) to work with. All finds from the surface scrape were recorded and collected. The total station is being used for the locational record.

The area of the house in Area B became more defined by the find distribution as well as by the feature distribution, and this will be become clearereen after clean-down of the area by hand.

In Area C, the extent of a possible well (as oral traditions by the Jury family suggest) and a possible foundation trench for a smallish building have turned up.

Cleaning of Area D and E is underway. Trowel cleaning of Area E uncovered a number of postholes, which look like they are aligned in a number of rows and might be the remains of small built structures and fences. A number of fire scoops were also discovered.

Area G was cleaned down and not much was found. We expected this to be the case because it is furthest away from the main house.

Over the next few days we will compile a CAD drawing of the survey so far, so it will become clearer where the various areas are located.

Archaeological terminology

Like any profession, archaeology comes with its own "language". This glossary helps with less familiar terms, particularly those used on this site.
