Omata, Jurys - Day 4

10 December 2007

The find distribution within the house (indicated by a white marker).

Area A (see sitemap)was cleaned down today. It showed a hard floor in the flat area close to the road. It is possible that this hard floor was the area of the cow shed, which Mrs Jury lost during the Land Wars.

Cleaning was started in Area B. A number of features appeared related to the house. The find distribution is clearly related to these features and very distinctive. So far the building construction is still a mystery.

Possible Maori potatoes

Further progress was made in Area C, which possibly contains the well. We excavated a pit-like structure around the round feature (see the video), which seems to be the well. Some interesting finds came from the fill of the pit, possibly related to the clean-up of the area after the Land Wars.

Ivan Bruce paid us a visit during Sunday and pointed out a few potato plants on the bank of the road cut close to the house area. We pulled out one plant and the size and colour of the potatoes seem to indicate an early cultivar, possibly used by Maori.

Archaeological terminology

Like any profession, archaeology comes with its own "language". This glossary helps with less familiar terms, particularly those used on this site.
