Omata, Autridges - Days 2-4 Preparations

2-4 February 2008

Cleaning surfaces, and surveying finds.

For two days now we have been cleaning the surfaces, surveying finds in the topsoil, and at the interface of the topsoil to the subsoil. The distribution is not random, though we don't know yet what the pattern relates to. An area without any finds may relate to a well.

Molten pieces of bottle glass and window glass seem correlated to the burning of the house and their distribution seems to focus in one area of the excavation. With a bit of luck we should be able to pinpoint the location of the house in the next few days.

Another area seems to show large vessels, possibly related to dairy products.

The next few days will be much of the same until we hit the features like postholes, the well, and pits. We are hoping the wind will ease soon, it is hampering our activities on site.

Archaeological terminology

Like any profession, archaeology comes with its own "language". This glossary helps with less familiar terms, particularly those used on this site.

G'day! I'm Linda Terry from Brisbane Australia. I have just finished my Honours in Archaeology at the University of Queensland and am about to start my PhD. I am keen to get as much excavation experience as possible on historical sites and to learn how things are done here in N.Z. Janice, Hans and the rest of the team are great and don't make too many comments about my funny accent.
