Omata, Autridges - Days 6 & 7 Preparations

6-7 February 2008

Searching for artefacts, finding a well and fireplace.

Tuesday was a wipe-out due to high winds. We managed to search for artefacts along the bank towards the stream. The area with the most artefacts was just off our excavation area B.

A number of smaller anomalies are shown in the geophysical survey in this area. We relocated two of these anomalies using the fluxgate gradiometer. The first one is sheet metal, which looks fairly old, buried about 40 cm deep. It looks as if it is covering something. The other anomaly is a small fireplace, which has to be part of some structure related to the homestead, maybe an outdoor cooking area.

In another area of the excavation the first postholes are becoming visible. So far we have possibly three different structures: the area with the molten glass on the high point of the hillock, the area with emerging postholes a few metres downhill and the area around the fireplace.

Following a depression in the ground we found a possible well. It seems to have been re-dug and filled after the initial back filling.

Hey, I'm Emma Clifford (Aunty Em) from Otago University. I'm just about to embark on my combined honours year, doing both Politics and Archaeology. I'm having a really good time, regardless of the sunburn, that's what happens when you're from down South. Its awesome to be getting the extra experience, thanks to Janice, Hans and Len (the landowner) for giving us the opportunity and the rest of the team for the amusing moments.

Hi all! I'm Tash from the University of Auckland. This is my third excavation (second with both Janice and Hans). I'm entering into my third year of University with a field school to look forward to. In the mean time this historic excavation is becoming more and more interesting as each day passes (on site and at the end of each day), especially with all the experience being gained! Thanks Janice and Hans for this awesome opportunity and everyone for the great laughs and good company (including the 'girls' in the next paddock)

Archaeological terminology

Like any profession, archaeology comes with its own "language". This glossary helps with less familiar terms, particularly those used on this site.
