Meet the Team

Janice (PhD candidate, University of Auckland)
Hans (PhD, Marburg)
This excavation for my Doctoral research has been a wonderful experience. The site has been fantastic, with the archaeology giving me more stories to tell than we would have known from the written history. I would like to thank all the team that have contributed to this dig with so much enthusiasm, fun, willingness to learn and also hard work.
Thanks also to Len (pictured here with me, holding a piece of furniture from the house) and Heather Jury for their continued support and encouragement for my work.
I am one of the principals of Geometria, an archaeological consultancy based in Auckland. I have about 22 years of archaeological field experience both in the Northern and Southern Hemisphere. It is a most enjoyable experience to be part of a research project as relevant as Janice's one. Not only the enthusiasm of the Jury family towards their homestead but also the strong relationship of Nga Mahanga Tairi with the gun fighter element of the archaeological site make the hard work worthwhile!

Hi, I have just completed my Honours year at the University of Otago, going into my Masters thesis next year. This is my second excavation and the chance to be involved in a historic site, especially one as interesting as Mrs Jury's is a fantastic opportunity that I could not refuse. I would like to thank Janice and Hans, the rest of the excavation team, and the Jury family.
Hey everyone, I'm about to start my Masters year after completing my honours degree at Auckland University. The site has proved to be an awesome learning experience, with ts various occupation levels. It has thrown up many challenges that have added to my experience hugely. Thanks to Janice and Hans for offering me this experience and making it a thoroughly enjoyable time.

Barbara (BSc/BA Hons)
"Hey I'm Tasha, the youngest on the team with the least experience and having an awesome time! This excavation has given me an incredible opportunity to learn a huge amount and meet some great people. I'm still an undergraduate at the University of Auckland and haven't done my field school yet, so this dig has been a great learning curve. The historical focus of this excavation and its contemporary and past connection with the Jury family has added a real punch of the past to the whole experience. Thank you Janice and Hans for including me in this experience.
Hi everyone, I'm Barb and I just finished my honours year in archaeology at Auckland University. I'm looking to get a bit of work experience before I go back to do a masters and the opportunity to volunteer on Janice's excavation is a great way to get some experience digging a historic site.
The dig has been amazing, with some exciting and interesting things coming up every day. The crew is hard working and a lot of fun as well, which definitely makes a difference when you're stuck in a hole with them all day every day! Mrs Jury's has been a wonderful experience and my only regret is not being able to stay longer
Marty (BA PgDip Teaching)
Kathryn (BA Hons, MA )
"I'm a Geography teacher from Auckland. I have a major in Anthropology from University of Auckland. I have been looking forward to the opportunity to excavate in New Zealand after working overseas. Working with Janice and Hans has been a fantastic learning experience and I can't thank them enough. Rock on, Taranaki!
Hello, everyone. I have a MA in Anthropology from the University of Otago. I volunteered for the Mrs Jury excavation because I had recently returned to New Zealand from overseas and wished to update my knowledge and experience of New Zealand archaeology.
The Mrs Jury's excavation is extremely interesting and is giving me a lot of practical and valuable experience. This is my first time to excavate in the North Island and I am loving it. On a final note I want to thank Janice and Hans for giving me this exciting opportunity."
Hamish (BA Hons (Archaeology))
Linda (BA Hons (Archaeology), University of Queensland)
Hello, I'm Hamish Williams and I've just finished Bachelor of Arts with Honours in archaeology from Otago University. Will be starting work on my Masters later this year. Happy to be digging here on Autridge's Farm; I'm passionate about historical archaeology and we have a great team here in New Plymouth. Just a reminder, that this year is the International Year of the Potato, check out potato2000.org!!
G'day! I'm Linda Terry from Brisbane Australia. I have just finished my Honours in Archaeology at the University of Queensland and am about to start my PhD. I am keen to get as much excavation experience as possible on historical sites and to learn how things are done here in N.Z. Janice, Hans and the rest of the team are great and don't make too many comments about my funny accent.

Emma (BA Hons)

Hey, I'm Emma Clifford from Otago University. I'm just about to embark on my combined honours year, doing both Politics and Archaeology. I'm having a really good time, regardless of the sunburn, that's what happens when you're from down South. Its awesome to be getting the extra experience, thanks to Janice, Hans and Len (the landowner) for giving us the opportunity and the rest of the team for the amusing moments.

Like any profession, archaeology comes with its own "language". This glossary helps with less familiar terms, particularly those used on this site.
