Protecting Our Heritage
Tiakina Nga Taonga Tuku Iho o Aotearoa

The protection and care of our heritage is a task shared by the people of New Zealand.

The New Zealand Historic Places Trust recognises the need to work closely with the community and local and national bodies in order to successfully carry out its role of managing New Zealand’s cultural heritage. To achieve this, the NZHPT has particular responsibilities for the conservation and promotion of Maori heritage, as well as for the protection of archaeological sites.

The value of co-operative alliances between the NZHPT and its many stakeholders, including local authorities and the owners of registered heritage buildings, structures and sites, is recognised within the organisation.

Strategies are currently being developed to further develop these relationships, with the NZHPT looking to provide expert support through the provision of advice, consultancy and training.
