Protecting Our Heritage Tiakina Nga Taonga Tuku Iho o Aotearoa
The
protection and care of our heritage is a task shared by the people of New Zealand.
The
Historic Places Trust recognises the need to work closely with the community and
local and national bodies in order to successfully carry out its role of managing
New Zealands cultural heritage. To achieve this the Trust has particular
responsibilities for the conservation and promotion of Maori
heritage, as well as for the protection of archaeological
sites.
Strategies
are currently being developed to further develop these relationships, with the
Trust looking to provide expert support through the provision of advice, consultancy
and training.
Why
do we Preserve the Past?
History
is the conscience of our society, those who fail to understand the past are condemned
to repeat its errors. These are good justifications for preserving historic sites
and erecting monuments. Learning from the past is rarely the only reason for seeking
to preserve it.
