Advocating for HeritageThere are growing community expectations that the Historic Places Trust will play a stronger heritage advocacy role that leads to greater heritage protection in resource management processes. The Trust works closely with local authorities to advocate for positive heritage outcomes in various ways, including making submissions on planning documents and resource consent applications, and delivering education, training and promotion programmes. Guide
to Heritage Provisions: Dangerous, Earthquake- Prone, Insanitary Buildings
and Dangerous Dams Policies |
![]() |
The Building Act 2004
requires territorial authorities to adopt a policy on dangerous, earthquake-prone
and insanitary buildings within its district. Section 131 (2)(c) specifically
requires such policies to state how the policy applies to heritage buildings.
The Historic Places Trust has prepared a guide (pdf, 381kb) to assist local authorities to prepare heritage-related provisions for policies dealing with dangerous, earthquake-prone and insanitary buildings, and dangerous dams. There are time restrictions imposed by the Building Act 2004, and we recognise that many local authorities have already prepared draft policies that are subject to public consultation.
