Conservation Week 2003 Events
New Zealand has many special heritage places which have local or national
significance. Throughout Conservation Week, we'll be celebrating places
that teach us about the culture and lifestyles of the people who came
before us and have shaped the country we live in today through a variety
of activities & events.

and sites in central Blenheim finishing at the River Queen
about 3.30p.m., where Marlborough's first historic brochure
will be launched.

A guided tour of 23 graves of notable and interesting early
Dunedin identities. This is an exciting opportunity to appreciate
this unique historic and architectural resource, and discover
the reasons for conserving and protecting our historic cemeteries
in New Zealand.
Your guides are: Brian Williscroft (Presbyterian minister);
Heather Bray (genealogist); Elizabeth Kerr (NZHPT); Ray George
(dental surgeon); Terry Hearn (historian); Dorothy Page (historian).
Costs: Adult $10 Child: $5. All proceeds will be used in the conservation of the cemetery
for future generations.

Join us to celebrate the launch of Historic Marlborough,
a new brochure that includes a wide range of historic buildings
and sites to visit throughout the Marlborough area. Fyffe
House curator, Bill Edwards undertook the work, and the
brochure is funded by the Historic Places Trust, Marlborough
District Council and the Marlborough Community Trust.

The Royal Opera House will be open for visitors with NZHPT
Wanganui Branch Committee Chairman Derick Mathews acting as
host and commentator. Two days only.
Tours will be limited to three groups of 15 per group spread

Experience Pompallier's
carefully researched and restored Edwardian garden full of
plants popular with colonial gardeners. One of the may intriguing
specimens to be found here is Pomapllier's own Poor Knight's
Lily - claimed to be the largest on the mainland. Take a guided
tour of Pompallier and learn about New Zealand's oldest factory,
and enjoy the stories that the buildings and grounds have
to tell.

Wanganui Bus Trip - Pipiriki

Two historic tours by bus along the Wanganui River Road to
Pipiriki and return. Expert commentary on the history of the
area, by past Chairman of the NZHPT Wanganui Branch Committee,
Norm Hubbard, and regular stops at historic sites.

Hands-on heritage at the Timeball

Senior high school students learn how to clean, classify
and catalogue artefacts found on the site of the historic
Timeball Station. Any members of the public who visit will

Heritage Day at the Kerikeri Basin - one of New Zealand's
most important historic areas, which includes the Stone
Store, Kororipo Pa and New Zealand's oldest building,
the Kerikeri
Mission House.
Buses are being arranged to the Kerikeri Basin from Whangarei.

The importance of preserving heritage will be highlighted
at a special function to present Tauranga's annual heritage
award. The city's history will also be celebrated by the launch
of Historic Tauranga - Te Papa: Heart of Tauranga -
a walker's guide to the heritage of Tauranga's CBD and published
by the NZHPT's Bay of Plenty Branch Committee.
Professor Dame Anne Salmond is the guest speaker at this
event.
The Living Image - Painting & photography exhibition

An exhibition of the painting and photography of several
memebrs of the Anderson family, who were prominent in the
cultural life of Palmerston North in the early 20th century.
Harold Anderson (1869-1926) designed the marble statue of
great historical significance that now stands in the Square.
It represents the Rangitane chief, Peeti Te Awe Awe. Harold
and other members of his family also left invaluable images
of many people and places in Manawatu.

Author Anna Rogers speaks about the New Zealand army nurses
who served overseas in the First and Second World Wars. Her
talk, laced with quotes and anecdotes, will be given in the
Nurses' Memorial Chapel built to commemorate three Christchurch
Hospital-trained nurses who died when the troopship Marquette
was torpedoed in October 1915. Anna's book While You're
Away: New Zealand Nurses at War 1899-1948 will be published
later this year. Admission: Gold coin donation
