Sailing into historyA unique opportunity to explore the early history of Northland
The New Zealand Historic Places Trust continues its partnership with the R. Tucker Thompson Sail Training Trust providing Northland five-day history cruises on board a tall ship. These voyages represent a unique opportunity to explore the early history of Northland from a ship much like those that plied these waters in the 19th century. The maritime approach provides a very different but authentic experience from that on-land.
Each history cruise begins in the Bay of Islands, looking at historic events connected with Maori discoverers, European navigators, interaction between Maori and missionary, as well as later events surrounding World War II and closer to the present time. From Marsden Cross, the ship voyages north up the beautiful Cavalli Coast and into Whangaroa Harbour, and return. Going ashore to further explore history is an important part of each voyage.
