New Appointments made to Historic Places Trust Board
New Zealand Historic Places Trust information release
11 June 2003
The New Zealand Historic Places Trust announced two new appointments to
its Board today, as distinguished South Island farmer, John Acland, and
Ngati Tuwharetoa Paramount Chief, Tumu Te Heuheu, agreed to bring their
vast experience to the governance of the country's lead heritage agency.
"We're delighted to have John and Tumu joining our Board just as
the New Zealand Historic Places Trust enters an exciting phase in its
history" said Trust Chairwoman, Dame Anne Salmond. "This is
a great year for heritage, with the increased funding commitment from
Government and the raising of heritage to a matter of national importance
under the Resource Management Amendment Act. We have been strengthening
our governance to reflect this, and we feel these two appointments will
be an excellent complement to our existing skills and experience."
John Acland is a former Board member of Meat New Zealand and lives in
the Category I Mount Peel Station Homestead in South Canterbury. He chairs
the Totara Redevelopment Advisory Committee overseeing a substantial project
to develop New Zealand Historic Places Trust property Totara Estate (North
Otago) as a showcase for heritage tourism and the meat industry.
Tumu Te Heuheu is a member of the Waitangi National Trust Board and has
been chair of Nga Whenua Rahui since its inception in 1990. Recently Tumu
returned from speaking engagements in Amsterdam and Paris where he was
the New Zealand delegate to the World Heritage Council.
The new appointees will meet the nine current New Zealand Historic Places
Trust Board members at its meeting this Friday June 13th in Wellington.
