LANDMARKS LAUNCH

New Zealand Historic Places Trust Information release
July 15 2005

The revised edition of Landmarks: Notable Historic Buildings of New Zealand has recently arrived in New Zealand and will be launched at Antrim House in Wellington at the end of July. Already in good books stores, this reformatted second edition continues to be a celebration of our unique and diverse architectural history - from the extravagant to the modest, the venerable to the sleekly modern, and even the eccentric.

Heritage places from the Bay of Islands to Foveaux Strait, the gems of New Zealand's urban and provincial landscapes are bough to life in Grant Sheehan's stunning photographs and David McGill's lively text. Phantom House is the publisher.

The first edition, in 1997, sold out and while that is normally a desirable situation, most authors prefer a book to go back into print rather than become a collectors' item. " I was disappointed that it vanished as quickly as it did. It was my ambition to re-do it" says Grant Sheehan.

"With the Trust's 50th anniversary approaching, it was a fortuitous time for Grant to approach the Historic Places Trust regarding a revised edition of Landmarks, and we were very pleased to be partner with someone who feels as passionately about our special places as we do" says the Trust's Chief Executive, Dr Bill Tramposch. "We are delighted with the result."

" We both believed that reformatting the book in a way that combined "coffee-table" elegance with being a useful but light reference book to carry on a trip to visit some of these places would be best option, and still keep the price readily affordable".
Landmarks shows us the beauty and diversity of our built landscape and reminds us why so much of it has been and remains worth saving. This beautifully and thoughtfully revised edition coincides with the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Trust and retails in good bookshops for $49.95.
