Historic Places Trust launches resource for schools
New Zealand Historic Places Trust Information Release
27 February 2008
The New Zealand Historic Places Trust has produced an education resource
to accompany an interactive multi-media history exhibition currently on
display at Old St Paul's in
Wellington.
The exhibition is intended to fit neatly with NCEA requirements and engages
students by approaching history from a very personal perspective. The
multi-media display presents touching and educational interviews with
New Zealanders recalling how they were personally affected by war time
at home during WWII.
The teaching resource has been designed for teachers by providing background
material for a trip to the exhibition. The pack also includes recommended
classroom activities, homework tasks, ready-made worksheets, possible
off-site visits and references for further available material.
"Many students have difficulty identifying with historical topics
as they are not able to relate to the many aspects of history. They fail
to see the relevance to their own lives. Both the exhibition and the education
resource are designed to approach history from a very personal perspective
and explore links between the past and people's personal memories,"
said co-author Silke Bieda.
The comprehensive resource links well with the old and new curricula
and focuses in particular in the key competencies for lifelong learning
and values exploration. Its essential learning areas are Social Sciences
(History, Social Studies) and other learning areas include English.
The resource is designed to cater for a wide range of achievement levels
and is divided into six chapters:
- War in Our Own Backyard
- A Friendly Invasion
- Marines Training Camps
- A Home Away from Home
- Hell in the Pacific
- Old St Paul's Remembers.
The chapters are structured to relate directly to the six stories which
are told in the exhibition which was opened by the Governor General and
Prime Minister last May.
The resource kit is FREE when you book a class tour of the exhibition
and will be mailed out to the teacher ahead of the visit. Tours are $2
per person. Alternatively the kit is available for sale for $20.
